GP3, here we go.

Q1. What explains the proliferation of global public-private partnerships of the last decade?
Q2. How effective are global public-private partnerships at accomplishing their objectives?
Q3. What accountability mechanisms do global public-private partnerships provide?
I have these huge broad big questions. I think I am moving in a good direction, towards something with potential. Scary as it is, I have narrowed to one topic: GP3s it is.

my thesis.

(oct 17) I expect that states and IOs will include non-state actors in governance if doing so lowers the costs of governance. This statement produces several hypotheses for the frequency and type of participatory arrangements between states, IOs and non-state actors.

(oct 07) Nonstate actor attempts at persuasion for normative reasons to gain inclusion in IO governance is neither necessary nor sufficient for granting of formal participatory roles. A combination of the supply of comparative advantages benefiting IOs and states and the presence of de facto veto held by non-state actors will predict the type of formal participation granted to non-state actors.

(feb 07) i dont have one yet. hopefully in this corner i will slowly create one. this is where i will practice making a simple statement rather than verbose drivel i am prone to. it will evolve as i progress. it will become something fantastic.

to give a preview: it will, generally, be appropriate for a graduate student studying international relations. it will, essentially, be about relations qua international.

GOAL checklist

1: Question: Under what conditions do IOs extend formal participatory roles for non-state actors?

2: Theoretical approach: Rationalism, Principal Agent Analysis. Specifically attention to the demand and supply factors influencing incentives of states, IOs, and non-state actors in a situation of stratetic choice.

3. Variable identification.

DV: formal participatory roles granted to non-state actors by international organizations. Four types under investigation 1) Implementation; post decision-making involvement, 2.1) Voice; can speak to decision-makers, involvement in negotiation, 2.2) Appeal; granted avenue to formally challenge decisions made with institutional review, 2.3) Vote, equal decision-making power

IV: Supply factors (comparative advantages of non-state actors. 1) financial, 2) expertise, 3) political facilitation of domestic acceptance [incomplete!]

4. Research Design - the current sticking point.
